Fixed route bus, van and sedan routing for Adult Day Care, Senior Centers, Recreation Centers and Community Transportation Programs

Fixed route bus, van and sedan routing for Adult Day Care, Senior Centers, Recreation Centers and Community Transportation Programs

Organizations that need to transport clients can have very specialized and nuanced ways to provide and schedule that transportation. Typically a 10-12 person bus, 4-6 passenger van, or 2-3 passenger sedans are part of their transportation program. Some typical models of transportation using such vehicles would include:
-transporting many clients from one central location to another. This could be a school that needs to transport students from the school to an event. This could be a senior living home that transports its residents from the home to the grocery store.
-picking up clients at their homes and transporting them to a central location. This could be Senior Center that has a Nutrition or lunch service which picks up clients to return them to the center. This could be an Adult Day Care service that picks up clients from their homes to get them to their day program location.
-picking up clients at one central location and then dropping them at different locations. This could be a drop-off of clients after an event at the Senior Center, Recreation Center, Adult Day program, or otherwise.

To effectively manage such complex scheduling and reduce the burden of your staff and drivers to keep track of your client’s schedules and dropoff/pickup locations, SPEDSTA has created several routing and scheduling tools to help:

  1. Fixed route scheduling: select all your passengers and then assign them to a driver or vehicle in one click when going from one common location to another common location. This takes into account several scenarios where you might have a given paper list of passengers for a given ride/event or you are scheduling rides on a per-call basis. In both cases, SPEDSTA schedules all the passengers and then produces a manifest/stop list for the driver.
  2. Pick-up pooling services: this allows you to schedule rides from different locations and all end up at a common destination. SPEDSTA not only allows for those rides to be scheduled but also optimizes the route for the sequence of pickups so that time and fuel are minimized. It also allows constraint on times, so that if 1 PM is the desired arrival time at the common destination, then all the pickup times are determined before 1 PM so that arrival happens at 1 PM. For example, if we are picking up passengers A, B, and C and dropping them off at location D, we might create a more optimized route and pick up with this sequence B, A, C, and then D. Our optimized routes can save up to 20-30% in fuel costs and driver time.
  3. Drop-off services: this allows you to schedule pickups from one central location and does dropoffs at different locations. For example, if we are picking at a central location and dropping off passengers A, B, and C, we might create a more optimized route and do dropoffs with this sequence B, A, C. SPEDSTA’s automatic route planning allows for the most efficient dropoff sequence.

Although these are the most common scenarios that SPEDSTA tools cover, your particular transportation program might have some special requirements for planning, scheduling, and routing. Contact us now to see how we might be able to help!
